That art is something which is specialised or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn’t everyone’s life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?” &nbsp; Michel Foucault A very quick re-cap of our story, and why we are getting married in Venice. We knew of each other from around town, Cape Town after all is a village. Maybe grew up in Italy and settled in the Cape around 2010, as did Rodan, although moving from Johannesburg doesn’t have the same appeal. For a few years we had chance sightings, but never really shared more than a few social niceties or rather un-niceties; perhaps we will explain. Fast forward to November 2018, at a weekend-long birthday party of one of our mutual friends, we properly connected. Needless to say, within two months and two dates we were joined at the hip, moved-in together, met each other’s families, travelled around Italy (Venice), celebrated Maybe’s 30th in Namibia, where she got down on one knee (literally) and proposed to Rodan. We then survived a pandemic thanks to the company of a special bridesman, and embarked on crazy business ventures together. We are now, three years post proposal, a pandemic and the birth of our baby (our gallery, THEFOURTH), finally tying the knot in Venice. True to form, we chose one of the most challenging locations and dates possible to get married (hello water! hello Architectural Biennale!); but here’s why: Going back to where Maybe is from, she grew up in a town called Udine, 111km from the city on water. She spent countless times feeding pigeons in San Marco and dressing up for the famous Carnevale as a little girl, then getting lost (and hating it) in the maze and heat of Venice’s Calle as a teenager. As for Rodan, him and Venice have a checkered past- one which includes sleeping at the train station in 2007 as a broke travelling punk, to participating at the Venice Biennale 10 years later. In 2017 his love for the city was deepened by spending 37 days catching vaporettos, sketching and sculpting away, all whilst eating tramezzini. In 2019, we decided to spend time together in Venice, and wrote our collective narrative of the city. Our collective realities consist of numerous negotiations, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health,[...] Venice for us symbolises a challenge for existence where finding beauty in the mundane is unavoidable.
